| PACKAGING INDUSTRY IN TURKEY Packaging provides protection to products by ensuring safe delivery from the place of manufacture to the point of sale or use. The Turkish packaging industry is a well developed sector. In recent years, innovations and the production of environment friendly packaging in the sector have increased. In addition new packaging formats are improved according to the quality, size and appeal of products. Growth in population and living standards, rapid urbanization, diversification of consumer goods, increase in the number of women The in labor force and increase in exports, mainly in consumer products, have all resulted in higher demand for packaging products. The Turkish packaging industry has grown rapidly over the past 10 years and has now become a huge sector. The growth of the sector reflects changing shopping habits, particularly in large cities, due to the presence of supermarkets, department stores and hypermarkets. Increased advertisement of consumer products, attractive point-of-purchase packaging and the boom in sales of canned and frozen food, apparel, and disposable medical supplies, all of which require specialty packaging and of course exports are other factors for the expanding packaging sector. Packaging consumption in Turkey has increased rapidly following world trends. As the retail market has expanded rapidly, the sales of packaged products to the final consumer has increased. This development has resulted in intensive studies on packaging forms and more rational packaging. In the last three years, the average growth rate of the Turkish packaging industry has been 10 % per year, and it is estimated to remain the same in the coming years. The annual consumption of packaging is about 3.5 million tons. The breakdown of packaging products consumption in Turkey is 37% for flexible packaging, paper, carton and corrugated board packaging, 22% for metal packaging, 20% for plastic packaging, 13% for wood packaging and 8% for glass packaging. Turkey produces all types of packaging materials and packaging products such as paper, cardboard, wrapping film, tape, plastics, glass, metal and wood. The need to arrange the product within the packaging according to its physical and chemical properties has lead to different ways of utilizing the main materials by processing them with new technologies. In other words, the flexibility of the materials has increased with regard to protection capabilities and shelf life. There are about 5000 companies manufacturing various packaging materials in Turkey. Most of the companies are medium and small sized companies, but there are also a few large companies. Eighteen packaging manufacturers are among the largest 500 companies in Turkey. The companies in the sector have shown very good performance in terms of quality and production capacity. Companies in the packaging industry are concentrated in Istanbul, Izmir, Kocaeli, Gaziantep, Adana, Ankara, Konya and Balikesir. The packaging sector is well-organized under the Exporters' Unions and sector associations. Plastic materials used in flexible packaging are also included. FIBCs are not included. The plastic packaging sector in Turkey has a total production of 1.29 million tons. Though most of the companies in the sector are small and medium size, about 11 companies are among the largest 500 companies. The Turkish PP woven bags and sacks sector has an important production and export capacity and ten large size companies producing big bags are organized under the Turkish Flexible Intermediate Bulk Containers Association. Paper, carton and corrugated board products have become one of the leading sectors of the packaging industry and account for approximately 33% of the packaging industry's production. There are eight paper packaging companies which are among Turkey's top 500 companies. The paper, carton and corrugated board products sector in Turkey has a total production of 1.74 million tons. Metal packages made of aluminium, tin, and iron sheets are supplied to the market in different forms. The steel packaging (vegetable oil, pickle, mineral oil, paint and other chemicals drums and boxes, boxes for food, beverages, aerosol and beverage lids, glass jar lids) and aluminium packaging (covers all kinds of food and non-food aluminium boxes) production capacity has reached 600,000 tons. Production, which was 100,000 tons in 1996, reached about 350,000 tons in 2006 and accounts for approximately 8% of the packaging industry's production. Of this figure, about 63 % is for steel packaging. Turkey has a well-developed glass industry. There is a group of companies, namely "Tiirkiye §ise ve Cam Fab. A. §." in the glass industry which dominates the domestic market. It accounts for approximately 95% of Turkey's total annual production and ranks 12th amongst the top 25 firms in the world. The Group consists of 26 companies which produce almost every kind of glass product, and Anadolu Cam which produces glass packaging. Turkey has a glass production capacity of 2.2 million tons in total. Approximately one third of this capacity, which is about 750.000 tons, is for glass packaging products. Anadolu Cam Tiirkiye §ise ve Cam Fab. A. §. exports glass containers as well as packaging production technologies. Wooden packaging consists mainly of products used for packaging agricultural products such as fresh fruits and vegetables, standard and non-standard pallets used in warehouse stacking and logistics, demountable transportation boxes and containers. Total capacity is estimated to be 600,000 tons/year and the production of various wooden packaging materials is about 500,000 tons/year. Sector products comply with recent ISPM15 Standards. The Turkish packaging sector has also reached world standards in terms of quality. The number of firms which have ISO 9000 Quality System Certificates, ISO 14001 Certificates and ISO 22000 Certificates is rapidly increasing. In addition, Turkish packaging manufacturers closely follow recent international and national developments in environmental issues and comply with environmental legislation and regulations. The research and development and new product development activities in the sector have gained more importance in order to achieve competitiveness worldwide. Exports Exports of the Turkish packaging industry show increasing trend. While it was 50 million dollars in 1990, the value of packaging products exports reached almost 2 billion dollars in 2007. Additionally, a large quantity of packaging products is exported indirectly as the packages of exported products. This remarkable high increase in export value has undoubtedly been achieved due to recent modernization and technological improvements in the sector. In 2007 the largest packaging group exported was plastic packaging products with a share of 68 % of total exports in the packaging industry. The main plastic packaging products exported are flexible intermediate bulk containers (sacks and bags, of a kind used for the packaging of goods). Turkey is the world's largest exporter of FIBC (Flexible Intermediate Bulk Containers) with a 29% share in 2006. The other plastic packaging products exported are sheets and films made of propylene polymers, vinyl chloride polymers and ethylene polymers, bags and sacks made of ethylene polymers, lids, stoppers, caps and other closures, carboys, bottles, flasks, preforms and similar articles. The next largest packaging group was paper packaging products with a share of 18 % of the total exports of the packaging industry. The main export products are paper and board cartons, mainly corrugated board products, boxes, cases, bags and other packing containers. In 2007, the total value of these packaging products reached 352 million dollars. The other important packaging group was metal packaging with a share of 11 % of the total exports of the packaging industry. The main export products are aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers (including rigid or collapsible tubular containers). In 2007, the total value of these metal packaging products reached 190 million dollars. If value of metal lids export was included in this figure, the total export value of the metal packaging rose to US $ 215 million in 2007. Glass and wood packaging products are other important export products. These products are carboys, bottles, flasks, jars, pots, phials, ampoules and other containers of glass and pallets, boxes of wood. Turkish packaging products are exported to a wide range of countries and Turkey is now exporting various packaging products to 184 countries throughout the world. Packaging products were exported mainly to the European Union countries, the CIS countries, Eastern Europe and the Middle East. The major markets for packaging products were Germany, the United Kingdom, France, the Russian Federation, Ukraine, Bulgaria, the USA, Italy, the Netherlands, Israel, Romania, Iran, Spain and Greece. In 2006, the Germany had a 10% share in Turkey's packaging industry exports and the United Kingdom had 9% PACKAGING MACHINERY IN TURKEY Turkey has a population of over 67 million and an annual growth rate of about 1.57 percent. The increase in the population and living standards, rapid urbanization, changing consumption patterns and the increase in women in business all result in higher demand for packaging products. As a result the Turkish packaging industry has grown rapidly over the past 10 years and has now become a huge sector. The growth of the sector reflects changing shopping habits, particularly in the large cities with their supermarkets, department stores and hypermarkets. Increased advertisement of consumer products, attractive point-of-purchase packaging and the boom in sales of canned and frozen food, apparel, and disposable medical supplies, all of which require specialty packaging, are other factors for the expanding packaging sector. Turkey produces all types of packaging materials and packaging products such as paper, cardboard, wrapping film, tape, plastics, glass, metals and wood. The annual consumption of packaging is about 2.7 million tons. The breakdown of packaging products consumption in Turkey is 37% for paper, carton, corrugated board and foil, 22% for metals, 20% for plastics, 13% for wood, 8% for glass. Turkey is an exporting country; the value of its export products reached about 35 million US dollars in 2002. More than half of exports goes to the EU which has high packing norms and standards. All these developments have resulted in a large packaging sector and a considerable demand for packaging machinery. At present the Turkish packaging machinery sector meets domestic demand and has a remarkable capacity for exports. The Turkish packaging machinery industry produces every kind of machinery and equipment required for the packaging industry and all the parts and accessories thereof. Cleaning and drying machinery, can-sealing, container labeling, vacuum or gas packaging machines, machinery for filling, closing, sealing, labeling of bottles, cans, bags, boxes, machinery for opening, filling and closing bags, packing or wrapping machinery-including heatshrink types, weighing and labeling equipment, machines for making bags and sacks and machines for making cartons, boxes, cases or similar containers are the main packaging machinery and equipment in Turkey. The majority of packaging machinery and equipment manufacturers in Turkey range from small to medium sized companies mainly located in Istanbul. Today, many Turkish packaging machinery manufacturers/exporters follow European and international standards and norms. Companies exporting to the European Union affix the “CE Mark” under the “New Approach” Directives. The obligation to affix the “CE Mark” was also initiated within the Turkish market in 2002. EXPORTS The Turkish packaging machinery sector largely meets the demand of the Turkish packaging sector and has recently concentrated on exports. Turkish packaging machinery industry exports were only 8 thousand US dollars in 1996. In 2002, total exports of the Turkish packaging machinery rose to 15.7 million US dollars. Turkish packaging machinery was exported to about 90 countries in 2002. The major markets for packaging machinery were Romania, Egypt, Italy, the Russian Federation, Germany, Iran, Greece, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, Syria and the Czech Republic. The products of the Turkish packaging machinery industry are exhibited in international and national fairs organised in Turkey. |
